Until now, if the Google Maps API key configured in Atlas stopped working (an expired card on the Google Cloud billing account, a changed API restriction, a deleted key), pickup point search in your checkout failed with it: buyers saw an error instead of pickup points until the key was fixed. Key problems like this are the single most common cause of “no pickup points show up in checkout” we see in support.
From today, when your Google Maps key fails, Atlas automatically switches to a built-in backup service for locating the buyer’s address, so buyers keep seeing pickup points near them and can complete their order. No action is needed and there is nothing to configure.
A working Google Maps key is still worth having: the map view and address suggestions in the checkout widget rely on it, and Google’s address matching is what we recommend. You can verify your keys any time with the built-in check in Atlas Pickup Points → Settings, which now tells you exactly what is wrong when a key fails. If you need to set up a new key, see How to create Google Maps API keys.
