How do accelerated checkouts work with pickup points?

Accelerated (express) checkouts let buyers pay quickly with Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, or Shop Pay. Their compact payment dialogs don’t show the pickup point selection, so the behavior differs from the regular checkout flow. This page summarizes what to expect on each surface.

#Shop Pay

Shop Pay displays the normal pickup point selection during checkout. Make sure the Include app block in Shop Pay option is checked on the app block. See Pickup points selection does not appear if it’s missing.

#Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal on the checkout page

When a buyer uses one of these express methods on the checkout page and picks a pickup point shipping option, the payment dialog can’t show the pickup point selection. With checkout blocking enabled:

  1. The buyer selects the pickup point shipping option in the express payment dialog and approves the payment.
  2. The payment fails because no pickup point has been selected.
  3. The buyer is shown an error and the pickup point selection widget.
  4. The buyer selects a pickup point, clicks Pay now, and completes the checkout.

#Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal on the product and cart pages

Express payment buttons on the product page, cart page, and cart drawer do not work with pickup point delivery. Shopify returns a payment error that prevents the buyer from completing the checkout. If a pickup point shipping option is listed first in the delivery methods list, this affects all delivery methods, not just pickup point delivery. We have reported this issue to Shopify and are waiting for a fix.

#Our recommendation

For the best buyer experience, disable accelerated checkout buttons outside the checkout page and keep the express methods as payment options within checkout:

  1. Disable accelerated checkouts on the product page in the theme customizer.
  2. Turn off accelerated checkouts on the cart page and in the cart drawer via the theme customizer.
  3. Optionally, deactivate express payment in checkout using a Shopify Functions-based app, such as HidePay.

Buyers can still pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal in checkout, and the pickup point selection works as expected.
